Ezekiel 13:22 “With lies you have made the hearts of the righteous sad… “and that’s how Satan works friends. He is working hard to make sure that we stay deceived so that we stay discouraged in our walks, and disqualified from service. Deception is so deeply ingrained into our lives that I think we don’t even notice. We have become so seared by the world’s version of truth, which isn’t even truth at all. It’s time to get real with what we are putting in our minds. Nancy DeMoss lays out a few steps for evaluating what is being presented to us as truth.
First ask,” what is the message here?”
second, “is it really true?”
third, “am I being deceived by a way of thinking that is contrary to the Truth?
I think the hardest part about this problem is that our sin natures are attracted to Satan’s deception. Even if we won’t outwardly admit it, we secretly want what the world is offering us. We think to ourselves; if I just have this, or attain this goal, then I will be satisfied. That is huge deception friends. How does this happen? How do we get to this point?
I remember one time when I was a kid my parents left my little brother and I home alone for a small amount of time. They had one rule -Don’t fight with your brother- What did my sin nature demand that I do? –FIGHT!!!- So mom and dad get home earlier than then expected… and I was toast. They start to question me – because they have eyes and my brother is crying and the living room has been torn apart by a tantrum tornado- and I squirm out a lie, but just a little one. They aren’t getting the confession they want so they prod a little deeper. And before I could control it, another lie pops out! Pretty soon I was so entangled in a mess of little white lies and I couldn’t even remember what the truth was. That’s how we get there. Just a little compromise here, a little slip there, and soon enough you can’t find the truth anymore either. So what do we do now? Where do we start? Well, the very beginning of course. We have to examine our thoughts, what are we allowing in that is feeding us lies? Then we have to combat those thoughts with the only thing strong enough to erase them. God’s word.
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Phil. 4:8
